my $0.02 is that ftp.XX is really ftp0 and ftp1.  and ftp2 onwards
is a different machine.  in part because if we ever do hierarchies
then we can say ftpX where X > 0 in ftpX.xx hierarchy, syncs from
ftp0.  which might be considered to be a different interface to
ftp1 (even if on the same machine), e.g ftp-master.xx == ftp0.xx

sorry - it's a bit long winded but the short version is maybe to
get a bunch of hostmasters to create ftp/ftp0/ftp1 to point at
the primary and then ftp2 onwards.

the namespaces probably needs regular trawling anyway - when i
semi regularly go through ftpX.au, about 30% of them drop out or
become out of date over a 6-12 month period with no notice :-(
