1) add or enable (uncommenting) the following lines to your kernel:

device          atapicam  # isn't enable in the default kernel

#SCSI Controllers

device         cd

(cdrecord needs a SCSI cd emulation)

2) recompile the kernel

It works on my thinkpad R51.
