I did not installworld yet, I thought that I needed to make the kernel
before doing the installworld.

Something is wrong with your env.  Did you installworld too?  

FWIW, the alpha GENERIC kernel in -current is SMP aware, so you should
just be able to follow the normal updating procedure of make
buildkernel; make installkernel.
