probably a bad idea. I think /etc/pwd.db certainly needs to be world
readable, so user processes can determine what user name they're being
run as using getpwuid. There's nothing to stop you trying of course, and
seeing how much breaks.

Why? The only config files you need to protect are those which contain
passwords.
