This desktop is running Gnome3 on FreeBSD-10.3:

~ # service -l | grep hal
hald
~ # service hald status
hald is running as pid 1056.
~ #

Note that in this case hald (and other services) are automatically
launched due to "gnome_enable" in /etc/rc.conf:

~ # cat /etc/rc.conf

...
# Gnome desktop
gnome_enable="YES"
# hald_enable="YES"
# dbus_enable="YES"
# polkitd_enable="YES"
# gdm_enable="YES"
gdm_enable="NO"
...

~ # grep -r gnome_enable /usr/local/etc/rc.d | less
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/dbus:dbus_enable=${dbus_enable-${gnome_enable}}
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/hald:hald_enable=${hald_enable-${gnome_enable}}
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/avahi-daemon:avahi_daemon_enable=${avahi_daemon_enable-${gnome_enable}}
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/avahi-dnsconfd:avahi_dnsconfd_enable=${avahi_dnsconfd_enable-${gnome_enable}}
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/gdm:gdm_enable=${gdm_enable-${gnome_enable}}
~ #

I've been using Gnome3 (and previously Gnome2 and mate) and overall it
has worked quite well for me (on my desktop system, I've never used it
on laptops etc.)

I did give lumina a quick try and thought it looked quite good. (I only
went back to Gnome3 because I now strongly prefer Gnome3's app/window
switcher).
