Those are for Large File Summit support (a hackish way to claim POSIX
support while still having sizeof(off_t) > sizeof(unsigned long)).
Effectively they do the same thing as FreeBSD does with `COMPAT'
syscalls, except that the ``old'' calls are still made available in
certain compilation environments. FreeBSD never supported (this
particular expansion of) LFS; 4.4BSD came with large file support
built-in and simply ignored the POSIX/C89 issue for the most part.
