I can confirm that this is still happening in World of warcraft,
however it didn't used to do this
sometime after the wine 1.1 release I think is when it started happening.

setting the mixer pcm 100 works every time, also at least in world of
warcraft, if you go into the
games Audio options and "Play" with the volume control FreeBSD's pcm
will be reset to 0

This Problem showed up around the time the new snd_hda driver was
imported, and for the longest time
I just wrote the problem off in my head has being because of the new snd_hda.

can anyone confirm this problem that does NOT use snd_hda?

Versions of FreeBSD I have tried this on include the following, and
all have this sound muting problem

FreeBSD 8.0 (updated 3-21-2009)
FreeBSD 7.1 STABLE
PC-BSD 7.1 RC1
PC-BSD 7.02
