The problem mysteriously fixed itself at some point.  I don't know what I did
to fix it, but at some point the problem just 'went away', and I haven't seen
it happen since.

Mmm, I haven't tested this profile creation stuff.  Mozilla just created me a
'default' profile which I've been using.  Perhaps that's a clue to the
problem?
