I read through the thread, but I don't understand the structure of your
network still.  Someone offered up a diagram; is that diagram correct?

From the descriptions, however, it sounds like a bad cable.  Try cranking
up a tcpdump then have the macs ping/telnet/Web/etc your server or the
router. If your cable is OK you should see the packets floating around.
