It lets your text run long if you allow it to.  When my mailer of
choice, Mutt, invokes my editor of choice, vi, to edit a message, it
uses the option "set wm=8", which sets a right-margin 8 characters from
the right-hand side of the screen.  My text gets wrapped automatically
as I type.  Your editor may vary.
