To everyone:

I am downloading latest ISOs and will re-install but without removing my
current installation (just overwrite).

Anyone got any "gotchas" that I should know about or watch out for?

CFFLAGS= -O -mmmx -msse
COPTFLAGS= -O possibly -cpu=p4

This is definitely your problem, CPU_TYPE=p4 is bad news.  What did you 
have for CFLAGS and COPTFLAGS?
