Use ANSI Escape sequences, e.g. 'ESC[1m' (bright text). There's a good
reference at http://www.wco.com/~kin/ref/computer/escape/out.html.

The ESC character is 0x1B (027d or \033), not the text 'ESC'. Use your
editor's ASCII code tool to enter the code for the ESC character.
