It would help to know what kind of computer ;-)

On FreeBSD, as I recall, the syntax is

    ifconfig vr0 inet 192.168.1.3 netmask 255.255.255.0
    ifconfig vr0 inet 192.168.2.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 alias

If you then do a
    ifconfig vr0
it will list all of the active aliases.
