However, the cited example doesn't indicate whether the execution was
successful or not.  An initial cut at an attempt to do that might be
something such as:

make <whatever> buildworld && \
  echo "Buildworld finished OK at `date`" || \
  echo "Buildworld errored out with status code $? at `date`
