Apologies for coming late to this... I see there's been a substantial amount of discussion regarding this, and you seem to have a satisfactory resolution. However, for the sake of completeness, there is a utility in the ports tree called unison which seems to fit your exact requirements. It works with SSH, and comes with or without GUI.
