Well the idea in the early days was to replicate a real desktop to make
it "familiar". Ejecting
would eject the disk from the drive while putting it away would match up
with 'you are finished using it so put it into the storage box'.
When you consider the one 400k drive used to start with and the fact
that you often ejected the system disk to insert an application disk,
then use a data disk for files, leaving the disk on the desktop as it
will need to be re-inserted later starts to make a little sense, while
putting it away implies you have finished with the disk and don't plan
to re-insert it again.
You can either use existing terminology in a similar way or you can
teach the user new terminology that is relevant to a new technology.
The first can conjure up different meanings for different people while
the later leaves no room for misinterpretation.
