By runnning both versions you can track apache releases for the non-secure side while waiting for the ssl version to catch up. Unless your secure pages have lots of traffic you can configure the secure server to only run a few httpsd's. The secure server wants to run a non-secure version too (port 80), set its port to something like 8080 in httpd.conf.
