Another thought would be using a microcontroller, it could at least help
with relaying info from the RS232 port.. look at the rabbit at
http://www.zworld.com . My company is looking at a similar situation except
we are sending a radio and the microcontroller (hopefully) to mars... The
microcontroller will also be handy because cooling shouldn't be a problem at
all, and it will run on a very small supply of power
