You can check on the Release Process pages eg.

    http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.8R/schedule.html

or you can look at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/ to see
if the appropriate release tag (in this case RELEASE_4_8_0) has been
laid down.
