I suppose this isn't really what Gary is asking, but for those
with WWW access it may be worth repeating that

   http://www.dejanews.com

provides a very quick and easy way to search several of the more
important FreeBSD lists.

For instance, a search on "5x86" turned up 27 hits in the

   muc.lists.freebsd.questions

newsgroup, covering the period Dec 95 to Jul 96.

There is a similar service provided by

   http://www.reference.com

I believe this also has an e-mail interface.
