In RELENG_4_3 I had been using the "set mtu 1450" as part of the configuration. After upgrading to RELENG_4_4 the "set mtu 1450" seems to be ignored and always uses a MTU of 1492. Downgrading only ppp to RELENG_4_3 fixes the problem. This machine is 800 miles away and in a different country.
