Could you use your mouse in xdm?

I don't know if this is related; but I couldn't get my mouse to work in KDE
or XFCE4 until I turned on hal.  I added the following to /etc/rc.conf and
rebooted:

dbus_enable="YES"
hald_enable="YES"
