Concerning the Nokia phones with a built-in modem, you are overlooking
an obvious one: 9110(i)*.  In fact, it comes with a serial cable, does
not require any additional software, and this mail is sent to you using
one of those and a FreeBSD notebook with a trivial user space ppp
configuration.

Works like a charm.

* OK, 9110(i) is not really a phone; it's a GEOS/DOS-based '486 PDA
with a phone built in :)  It would be interesting to get FreeBSD
booting on it.
