You make FreeBSD great. :) I tried the camcontrol suggestion first since it didn't require installing anything, but it didn't seem to work. Tried sysutils/ataidle next since it allows keeping spindown but with a reasonable timeout, and it seems to have worked perfectly: ataidle -P 127 /dev/ada0.
