Gak.  It's totally over-the-top-engineered.  It's not as bad as the
committed version though (that version has a 20-line comment which
explains everything except _why_ it complicates things to optimize
DIAGNOSTIC code, and pointers to the comment from all the diagnostic
ifdefs...).
