I'd love to do this, but it means a mandatory bootblock upgrade.  

Right now, that would be Very Bad, especially for 2.2.  I think I have 
another solution, but I'm waiting on some feeback from Bruce before I 
get too carried away.  He didn't like my first suggestion too much.
