Luigi, thank you for the reply. I thought that this model was an
"inexpensive/older Creative Notebook webcam" -- mea culpa. :-)

Unfortunately, removing ehci from the kernel config file completely
wiped out all traces of the webcam (except the line with vendor and
model number). Does this mean that a claim that particular camera is
"USB1.1-compatible" says nothing useful for our purpose?=20
