I know I've run vi in single user before (and less works), so it's not a dumb terminal, per se. For arrow keys in less, just use 'j' to go down and 'k' to go up a line (a la vi). For cutting and pasting, try using screen (/usr/ports/misc/screen). It will let you cut and paste, and also allows you to have virtual terminals and whatnot.
