In most cases, I compiled prior to the reboot an operating system (on the Dell PowerEdge 1950 III box). The other, UP box got stuck after a normal shutdown, it doesn't matter whether I did a 'reboot', 'shutdown -r now' or 'shutdown -p now' or simply pushed the power button. When those problems occured, the were preceded by 'not dying processes' and after several minutes the OS tried to kill those mustang processes the reboot or shutdown was performed and after a reboot or fresh restart, the filesystem went into the fsck-stuff.
