Well stick this in the archive.
Thanks to the good people on -questions, issue ->
setenv MAILHOST=your.host.tld
Then I issued make MAIL_GID=65534 CGI_GID=80 and it installed without 
any further problems.
Haven't the slightest idea why it couldn't figure out the mailhost 
automagically...
