Please DON'T top post to any FreeBSD list! This is starting to sound like it might be an interrupt routing issue and interrupts from the disk are sharing an IRQ with something else. "Something else" is generating interrupts that are never getting delivered, but the disk interrupts are waking the appropriate driver to allow things to proceed. -- R.
