 Since moving to a new controller the problem disappeared. I can't estimate
 whether it is possible to be a certain hardware configuration, but just
 for the record: it involved a Gigabyte 6BXD, running a SMP kernel, the
 hard-drive is an IBM-DTLA-305020.
