If the first time you compiled you did it as root - then there would be 
an a.out sitting there with root ownership which would not allow a 
regular user to over write it with a new a.out.

As to running it - if you are in the directory that any program is in 
that you want to manually invoke you must precede the name with ./ or 
else it wont be found.

So you would type:

./a.out

and not just a.out
