You'll need to cvsup the source (for the entire OS, not just the
kernel) then 'make world'.  For more information on this, take a look
at:

  o http://www.FreeBSD.org/handbook/stable.html

  o http://www.freebsddiary.org/current.html (it deals with -STABLE even
    though it's named current.html)
  o http://www.freebsdzine.org/attic/199907/cvsup.txt

Those should help answer some of your questions.  As for ppp and pppd,
they're part of the base distribution, so you won't need to add any
packages or ports to get them.
