AFAIK ftp.freebsd.org is capable of on-the-fly-compression.
When in /pub/FreeBSD type one of the following commands:
get 2.2.7-RELEASE.tar.gz
get 2.2.7-RELEASE.tgz
get 2.2.7-RELEASE.gz
get 2.2.7-RELEASE.tar
