It would be easier to just edit /etc/sysconfig and find the ifconfig_xxx 
lines, copy, and edit as appropriate.  Don't forget to compile in the 
drivers.

Did you run 'xf86config' to set it up?

You should be able to run it as just ``X'' then.

Killing init is not a good idea.  The system will come to a screeching, 
possibly destructive halt.  use shutdown; it'll kill everything and 
properly bring down the system.  To answer the question:  yes, that is 
normal.
