A while back, I asked how to get around the problem of my ThinkPad 600E freezing when trying to install FreeBSD 3.2. I was helped on my way by some kind souls here and the ThinkPad is running FreeBSD just fine ever since. However, I've received numerous mail messages from others with the same problem looking for help, so I thought I'd post the solution to the problem here so that it'll get in the mail archives. :) The problem was that the generic kernel wasn't ready to handle large RAM sizes, and my ThinkPad has 128M of RAM in it. Here's what I had to do: 1. open the ThinkPad's memory access panel (on the bottom of the laptop). 2. remove the extra RAM so you have 64Mb or less (taking appropriate static precautions, of course) 3. install FreeBSD. 4. configure a new kernel to handle larger RAM sizes (see comments in LINT). 5. replace your memory 6. boot up the new kernel, and you should be off and running. This worked for me and everyone who corresponded with me asking what I did.
