I actually found an answer to this problem by searching Deja, it
would appear that filesystems created with the 2.2.x series of the
Linux kernel contains superblock information that breaks
compatibility with 2.0.x series of the Linux kernel as well, the fix
apparently is to run mke2fs -O on the partition in question to turn
on sparse superblocks.
