Even in the Linux version of vi (which is just ViM, last I checked) 'i' for
insert works as expected.  It could be a problem with your terminal
settings, if you are using a wacky term program.

Try settings your terminal to cons25, and fire up vi again. =20

% set term=3Dcons25
