I know this is slightly later than the weekend, but I have some new results
from playing around with this.

Firstly, it's impossible for me to get what you ask above as the only
way I can boot an SMP kernel with the cards in the box and the kernel is
to use 'safe mode'. Just ACPI disabling on it;s own does not do it.

Secondly, and this is very interesting, I *can* get the machine to boot
SMP off an IDE drive - but I have to take out not just the Adaptec
SCSI card, but also the Compaq/HP ARID card too. So it looks like
the problem may be with pci-bus SCSI cards in general.

If I compile a kernel with the ciss and ahc drivers removed, and use an
IDE boot drive, then the machine does, finally, boot SMP. This is with
ACPI enabled too (though I still disable the ACPI timer).

As I have finally got a running SMP kernel then I have included the verbose
dmesg and mptable output below. I have run out of things to try though - I
can only make the machine boot SMP if I take out the disc controllers, which
is not much use for a server :-)
