Hm. I bet you forgot to install DES this time when you did last time.

Boot with the -s option to get single user mode and run the following:

mount -u /
mount -a

That will get your filesystems back.

Then run `vipw' and make sure the password file is OK.  Take a look at the
passwords: if they don't start with $1$ you need to fetch & install the
`des' distribution.
