Subject:   ufs_dirbad panic

I installed FreeBSD-3.3R on a Socket-7 based computer. This worked fine 
until it suddenly panic:ed during a console session. Now when I try to boot 
the kernel (tried kernel.GENERIC also) it halts on:

[..many lines..]
changing root device to wd0s1a
WARNING: / was not properly dismounted
/: bad dir ino 35841 at offset 0: mangled entry
panic: ufs_dirbad: bad dir

syncing disks... 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 giving up
Automatic reboot in 15 seconds - press a key on the console to abort
--> Press a key on the console to reboot <--

Any ideas or suggestions on how to go about this problem without wiping the
drive empty are most welcome!

The machine contains:
1 pc 	VIA 82C597 motherboard
1 pc 	Intel Pentium 200MHz MMX
1 pc 	32MB SDRAM
1 pc 	6.2GB Fujitsu MPE3064AT IDE disk drive
1 pc	S3trio AGP graphics card
4 pcs	Realtek 8029 PCI Ethernet (NE2000)
