Howdy, As a courtesy to other FreeBSD users who may experience this error message, my problem was due to the onboard termination failing at 40MHz. Disabling termination for the channel and using a twisted-pair ribbon cable with an LVD terminator fixed my problem. Also a lot cheaper than replacing the controller... Thanks to David Greenman for an accurate diagnosis.
