Well, you can get it piecemeal or gulp the whole thing.  Please note that
the ftp server at ftp.freebsd.org runs wu-ftpd which allows you to tell

get foo.tar.gz, 

and you get the whole directory tree rooted at foo as a nice gzipped tar
file.

I would advise against getting the whole freebsd that way since you will
violate export restrictions on cryptographic codes.  Instead, go into the
freebsd repository (2.1-RELEASE, whatever) and get it directory-by-directory,
tar-gzipped.  Please avoid the directory securedist; get it from 
internat.freebsd.org
