After a suggestion offlist, here's the additional information from a boot -v: Mounting root from ufs:/dev/ad0s1a ad0s1: type 0xa5, start 63, end = 2503871, size 2503809 : OK /: bad dir ino 2 at offset 0: mangled entry panic: ufs_dirbad: bad dir syncing disks.... 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1..etc giving up on 1 buffers thanks folks.
