It's supposed to work. Some committers are less than sanguine about
keeping it working, though. It's been known to break horribly in the
Perl build.

The advantage of this method is that it only updates what needs to be
updated, instead of rebuilding everything.

You may also want to explore the joys of adding 'INSTALL=install -C'
to /etc/make.conf.
