Subject: graphics without windows?

What I want to do is to devote one of my virtual consoles to
graphics. That is, I'd like for a program (presumably not on that
virtual console) to be able to display just plain graphics there.
Any hints on how to do this? I *don't* want to run a windowing
system -- I have no need for it and they're all monstrous resource
hogs.
