This is what happens for me (3.3S) with a write-protected disk in the
drive:

~>dd if=kern.flp of=/dev/rfd0
dd: /dev/rfd0: Input/output error
1+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes transferred in 1.114227 secs (0 bytes/sec)
~>
No problems

~>dd if=kern.flp of=/dev/fd0
Kernel panics

Also, a few of the tutorial sites seem misinformed about the use of
/dev/rfd0, a For an example, see the FreeBSD Diary's 23 Apr entry.
