You've read the excellent handbook chapter on printing?  It really is
good.

It's hard to tell what might be wrong when you don't say what kind of
a printer it is--a postscript printer, a non-postscript, an HP Laserjet,
or whatever.  It probably needs a filter of some kind...what can you
tell us?
