It depends. I have the feeling, although I could not tell for sure,
that you got the error you did in your other build attempts because
you were skipping the 'make depend' step. If that is so, nothing would
have worked until you did that.

The 'make clean' just eliminates some other possible problems, but in
theory, is not needed. 'make' should be able to figure out what
targets need updating.
